I remember a cyclist from Estonia by the name of Jannus Kuum.
He defected from the Soviet Union (Estonia) back in the mid 80's
and rode professionally in the USA for Schwinn/Icy Hot. I recently
read an article that referred to him as being deceased.
Is this true? Anyone know what happened to him? I remember him
as being an incredibly strong and talented rider. I was saddened
to hear he was gone. No need for a big argument. Just a simple
"Here's what happened" will be greatly appreciated.

Not sure if anyone is still on this thread after 13 years - but I bought my Stealth Mountain Bike from him about 1997/1998 at his Scottsdale warehouse store, met his lovely Olympian wife and his two Dobermans (big puppy dawgs) that "patrolled" the warehouse. Never knew he had passed away until years later when I rode up to a Jaanus booth at an event and everyone was excited to see my Stealth, they asked me where I got it... his bikes were selling for much more at local retail shops, fortunately the sales-kid told me they were made locally, the rest is history. I still have it, and it's still in great condition.

RIP Jaanus.

I just found this on the website of the UK Continental team Rapha-Condor:

The fourth new face in the team will be Elliot Porter. Porter is the son of double Olympian Maria Blower-Porter and Norwegian former professional Jaanus Kuum. Porter has only been racing for two years, but after an impressive adaption to the sport he has been identified as a rider with great potential for the future.

So you're saying Kuum has a shot ?

Yeah his son Elliot is one of my team mates. He's a great time triallist and climber. I saw an old photo of Jaanus and there's a lot of resemblance

JAANUS KUUM did NOT commit suicide. He was killed in Oslo Norway in a car crash with 3 others. He died 26th August 1996. I am introduced him to his wife Maria, mother of Elliott Porter, Jaanus's son, also a professional. Jaanus was attacked several times with physical injury by the KGB in the years following his defection. No one can find out the details of this accident, not even his own brother, for that reason there is speculation that it was caused because he defected in 1984-85. John Pierce Bristol UK. (in some way related to the family)

Thanks for this John. Somehow the media can never get it correct.
