Slightly OT: MSG Velodrome in Sergeantsville, NJ

When we drive from where we live to where we grew up, we've been going
by a sign that mentions a Velodrome - I decided to look it up and here's
what I found

http://www.hmdb.org/marker.asp?marker=30636

Apparently the track that was previously in MSG was, in 1932,
reconstructed in Sergeantsville, NJ, but unlike at MSG, here it was
exposed to the elements. I wonder how long it lasted - anyone know?

This location isn't all that far from T-town - I'd guess an hour or so's
drive.

A board track rebuilt outdoors? Someone's cash:brains ratio is berry
berry high.

It struck me as odd, too, but I guess having it outdoors must have been
the only alternative to throwing it into someone's fireplace.

The whole thing is odd - that's why I'm hoping someone here might know
more about it. The oddness starts with the word "velodrome" on a blue
roadside sign in the middle of horse country in NJ - it's about 4 miles
or so from the Delaware River on NJ Route 523. Sergeantsville is a
one-blinking-light town, not even a real traffice signal.

In the 30s, you were nowhere unless you had a Six-Day.

There were literally hundreds of short 6 trips to the klick board
tracks around the world.

Six-day racing was in its hay-Day and admittance was cheap and
since the riders were on the track 24/24, many impoverished men
slept in the stand having to pay only one admission for the whole
six days.

Times were hard since the Depression was devastating the World.

Davey catalogued the tracks one time a few years ago, although he
possibly missed one or two, and published them in his Six-Day
Website/Newsletter/Forum.

The site is currently archived on third party servers which are
temporarily not accessible..

If any further info on your track is available,, it will be posted
here..

I doubt it lasted very long. The velodrome in Blaine, MN had an expected
life of 20 years and is at 22 years old. The rate of deterioration is
such that no one is looking past this coming season. It has lasted as
long as it has because they used a rare and expensive ultra dense
hardwood.

It seems likely that they took the one out of MSG to replace it. If it
had some age on it before it got outside I'll bet the weather made short
work of it.

I'm told the plywood velodromes that Peter Junek pioneered have short
lives also.

The same hardwood that most RBR brains are comprised of ?
