So some prima donna belts out a 100 meter sprint
and wins by a wheel. BIG DEAL. The peloton ends
up getting the same time. GC podium contenders
are not generally affected by what happens in a
sprint stage.

To me this seems a wasted stage. A place filler.
A sideshow. A delay tactic on the way to the
podium.

At least someone from the breakaway doesn't win.

Tell that to the legendary Eddy Merckx! Generally when
he broke away he stayed away and even increased
the time from the peloton. Now, that's adding insult
to injury. Froome might have this ability should he
choose to be bold enough to use it.

The chances of Froome winning Milan-San Remo 7 times by any strategy
whatsoever are somewhere between zero and none.

As some dumbass here has previously noted, Merckx was racing against factory workers.
