If you look at the Pinarello she's riding you can see that there has been a drastic revolution in carbon fiber bike frames. Since the strength of a tube goes up with the square of it's diameter the larger the tubing while the weight goes up with the diameter alone it is easier to make a frame stronger.

I didn't see any frame failures in this year's Tour. That was pretty different from years before.

The designs look to me to have been actually engineered now. The head-tube to down-tube to chain-stays look like they are designed to take the entire load and the top-tube and seat stays are a backup system braced against the bottom bracket through the seat tube.

Certainly we must have some mechanical engineers here who can analyze these things for us?
